About the Course

The Course Aims to Cover Thermal Engineering – Basic theory and application of heat transfer and structural behaviour in the material caused by thermal loads.

Description of the Course :

In structure thermal load is defined as the temperature that causes the effect on material and structures, such as outdoor air temperature, solar radiation, underground temperature, indoor air temperature and the heat source equipment inside the structure/component.

Thermal analysis is a branch of materials science where the properties of materials are studied due to the change in the temperature. Thermal analysis deals with transfer of heat energy due to variation in the temperature and the corresponding deformations caused in the material. Heat transfer is the process of transfer of heat from high temperature reservoir to low temperature reservoir. Heat transfer is the movement of heat energy across the boundary of the system due to temperature difference between the system and the surroundings. Heating or cooling a material causes thermal expansion or contraction respectively, this localized movement of material when restricted causes thermal stresses of the opposite sense i.e, thermal expansion causes compressive residual stress and thermal contraction will cause tensile residual stress in the material.

Thermal Analysis is essential for engineering graduate students / teachers / technical staff / design engineers in solving problems hence they should have the basic knowledge of the theory and its applications. We believe that training graduate students/design engineers to use a specific software package without providing basic knowledge of the underlying theory is a disservice to the students/design engineers and can be dangerous for their future/present employers. Thus, attending this course engineers will gain theoretical and practical knowledge of thermal analysis and its application with the ability to identify and rectify the errors while solving engineering problems and interpret the results from the analysis. The course is composed of theory and practice on commercial finite element software in solving thermal engineering problems in structures which includes heat transfer aspect in solid/structures and deformation characteristic due to temperature effect on solids/structures.
