About Course

Design process include the establishment of objectives and criteria, synthesis, analysis, construction, testing and evaluation. Thus, the prime purpose of engineering design is to apply scientific knowledge to the solution of technical problems.Manufacturing is a process of converting raw material in to finished product by using various processes, machines and energy.
Design for Manufacturing is the process of designing parts, components or products for ease of manufacturing with a final goal of making a better product at a lower cost. This is carried out by simplifying, optimizing and refining the product design by selecting cost effective material and manufacturing process and efficiency of assembly in the early stages of product design. Thus, by simplifying the design of a product it is possible to manufacture and assemble it more efficiently, in the minimum time and at a lower cost. Hence design for manufacturing describes the process of designing or engineering a product in order to facilitate the manufacturing process at reduce costs. Design for manufacturing will allow potential problems to be fixed in the design phase which is the least expensive place to address them before manufacturing the product and will assure both quality and productivity which will be the first step to success.

What Will You Learn?

  • Consider the factors in selecting proper materials and manufacturing processes for designing products or components by applying the relevant principles for ease and economic manufacturing.
  • Identify faulty design factors leading to increased costs of the parts/components/product while manufacturing using various machining operations for the given specification.
  • Apply the concepts related to reducing machined areas, simplification by amalgamation and separation, clamp ability, accessibility, design tolerance and suggest appropriate manufacturing processes during the design stage of parts/components/products so as to increase the productivity and reduce the cost.
